Artist Statement

I am drawn to the human figure as a subject because of its accessibility, and obvious inherent familiarity. It is a constant struggle to progress in the technical aspects of the human form. Despite the formal challenges of the figure I impose on my work a personal edict of showing “some sign of life”. Personally, the most exciting moments are when I try to capture the gesture and emotion of a figure with limited and/or distorted information. Can I leave a face blank and still express emotion? There is a consistent tug of war in my learning to accurately craft the human form while simultaneously dismissing those technical aspects in pursuit of a more primal artistic expression.

I believe I am most influenced by the expressionists. The mark-making that clay allows gives a unique record of the process. When there is evidence of how quickly, how hard or soft, marks are made-- this can be seen as story telling in itself.

While I'm not sure what makes a successful work, I doubt it's the same reason for everyone. But I know what I strive for when creating. The formal aspects must be considered. I can then appreciate the art as simply an object with composition or color. But the exciting part is the effect the art may have on me. Does this art stir something, spark something, inspire me to explore further? Whether good or bad, this reaction gives me a small window into my honest self.
